The complete Google Business Profile guide for contractors
By Collin, Buildra Systems
If you only fix one thing about your online presence this month, make it your Google Business Profile. For most contractors, it is the single fastest path to more phone calls, and it sits right at the top of the search results in the map pack, above the regular website listings. It is also free. The problem is that most profiles are set up once, half filled out, and then ignored, which leaves a wide-open opportunity for the contractor who treats it seriously.
This guide is the full playbook we use for our clients across Knoxville and East Tennessee, and it works just as well anywhere in the country.
Why the profile is the fastest win
The map pack, that box of three local businesses with stars and a map, appears above the organic results for nearly every contractor search. People call straight from it without ever visiting a website. Because a Business Profile can start ranking in weeks rather than the months that organic SEO often takes, it is usually the first thing we optimize for a new client. It is the closest thing to a quick win that ethical local marketing offers.
Complete every single field
A complete profile is eligible to rank. A bare one is not. Google rewards thoroughness, so fill in everything that applies to you, and do not leave fields blank because they seem minor.
- Business name exactly as it appears in real life, with no keyword stuffing.
- A primary category that is as specific as possible, plus relevant secondary categories.
- Every service you offer, each with a short, plain-language description.
- Accurate hours, including special hours for holidays.
- A description that explains what you do, who you serve, and where, without sounding like a robot wrote it.
- Your service areas, set to the real towns and counties you cover.
Categories and services matter more than you think
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Be precise. An electrician should not settle for a generic contractor category if a more specific electrical category exists. Then add secondary categories for the other work you do. Under services, list the actual jobs people search for, like panel upgrades, EV charger installation, or boat dock wiring, so your profile lines up with real searches.
Photos do more work than most owners realize
Profiles with regular, real photos get more clicks and more calls. You do not need a professional photographer. Clean before-and-after shots of your work, your trucks, and your crew are perfect, and adding them consistently tells Google the business is active. A profile that keeps getting fresh photos looks alive, and Google favors businesses that look alive.
Reviews are the engine
Reviews are one of the strongest ranking factors in the map pack, and recent reviews carry more weight than old ones. A steady trickle of new five-star reviews will usually beat a larger pile that all arrived years ago. Reviews are also what a customer checks right before calling, so they help you rank and help you close.
- Ask every happy customer right after the job, while the good experience is fresh.
- Send a direct link to your review page so leaving one takes seconds.
- Never buy or fake reviews. Google detects it, and customers can smell it.
- Respond to reviews, good and bad. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint impresses the people reading later.
Use posts and the Q&A section
Google lets you post updates directly on your profile, and it treats an active profile more favorably than a dormant one. You do not need to write essays. A short note about a recent project, a seasonal reminder, or a current offer keeps the profile fresh. Seed the questions and answers section with the questions customers actually ask, so the answers are there before someone has to ask.
Get specific about your service area
If you serve several towns, say so clearly. A contractor covering Knoxville, Maryville, and Oak Ridge should make that explicit in service areas and reinforce it on the website with a page for each. Specific local signals help you show up for searches in each place rather than blending into a vague region. The more precisely your profile reflects where you actually work, the better it performs.
Common mistakes that quietly hold you back
- Setting it up once and never touching it again.
- Keyword stuffing the business name, which violates Google policy and can get you suspended.
- Letting your name, address, and phone number drift out of sync across the web.
- Ignoring reviews, or worse, arguing with negative ones in public.
- Leaving services and categories vague, so Google never quite knows what to rank you for.
Let us run it for you
The profiles that win are not the ones that were perfect on day one. They are the ones that stay active. If keeping up with posts, photos, and review requests sounds like one more thing you do not have time for, that is exactly the kind of ongoing work we handle for clients so the profile keeps pulling in calls without you thinking about it. Run a free audit and we will show you how your current profile stacks up against the contractors beating you in the map pack.
