AI search is the new front page: how contractors get recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini

By Collin, Buildra Systems

For twenty years, getting found online meant ranking on Google. That still matters, but a real shift is underway. A growing number of people now skip the list of blue links entirely and just ask an AI assistant who to call. They open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude and type something like: my water heater is leaking, who is a good plumber near me and what should I expect to pay? The assistant gives a short, confident answer, sometimes naming specific businesses. If your business is the one it names, you have already won the customer. If it is not, you were never in the running.

This is one of the most important changes in how local businesses get found in years, and almost no contractor has adjusted for it yet. That gap is the opportunity.

What is AI search, really?

AI search is what happens when someone uses an AI assistant to get a recommendation or an answer instead of scrolling a page of results. You will also hear it called generative engine optimization, or GEO, and answer engine optimization, or AEO. The names are new, but the idea is simple: instead of ranking on a list, you want to be the answer the AI gives.

The difference for a business owner is enormous. On Google, a customer compares ten options and you fight for attention. With an AI assistant, the customer gets a short recommendation and often acts on it. Being named is far more valuable than being one of ten links, and being left out is far more costly than ranking on page two.

Why this matters for contractors specifically

Contractor decisions are high-intent and often urgent. Someone with a burst pipe, a dead breaker panel, or a roof leak wants a trustworthy answer fast. That is exactly the kind of question people are increasingly handing to an AI assistant. And because these are local, service-based decisions, the assistant leans heavily on the same trust signals that power local SEO, which means the work overlaps with what you should already be doing to rank on Google.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

AI assistants do not invent recommendations out of thin air. They pull from the open web, business listings, reviews, and structured information they can read and trust. A few things make your business easy for an AI to recommend with confidence.

  • A website with clean, clear structure that an AI can read and understand without guessing what you do.
  • Content that directly answers the questions buyers actually ask, in plain language.
  • Structured data that spells out your services, service areas, and business details in a format machines parse easily.
  • A complete, consistent business profile across the web, so your details line up everywhere an AI might look.
  • Real reviews that signal you are a trusted, active business.

None of this is exotic. It is good fundamentals, applied with AI assistants in mind. The reason it works as an advantage is that most local contractors have not done the fundamentals well, let alone tuned them for AI.

What you can do today

You do not need to become an AI expert. You need to make your business legible to both Google and the assistants. Practically, that means a few moves.

  • Write clear pages that answer real questions: what you do, where you work, what it costs, and how the process goes.
  • Add an FAQ that mirrors how customers actually phrase their questions.
  • Mark up your services, location, and reviews with structured data.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and your information consistent everywhere online.
  • Keep earning real reviews, since they feed both Google rankings and AI trust.

The early-mover advantage

Here in the Knoxville area, we have yet to find a single competing agency actively optimizing local contractors for AI search. That is not a small detail. Search behavior tends to move slowly and then all at once. The contractors who invested in Google SEO early spent years quietly collecting calls while their competitors caught on. AI search is at that same early stage right now. The window to be the recommended name is open, and it will not stay open forever.

This applies far beyond East Tennessee. Whether you are in Knoxville or a major metro across the country, the assistants are pulling from the same kinds of signals, and the same early-mover logic holds.

Get ahead of it

Buildra Systems builds and manages websites specifically to be found by both Google and AI assistants. It is the core of what we do, and as far as we can tell, no other local agency offers it yet. If you want to know whether an AI would recommend your business today, run a free audit and we will show you where you stand and what it would take to become the answer. There is no pitch and no obligation.
